My last weekend of freedom for 3 weeks was spent visiting exhibitions. First we went to Photographer Unknown at Monash Uni Museum of Modern Art (MUMA) [link] . What really stood out for us was the collection of old every day snapshot photographs that has been collected at flea markets and more recently on e-Bay. Some look more than one hundred years old and are lined across a large wall and in a series of glass cabinets. It reminds me of how volatile digital images stored on computers are. A print can last hundreds of years if stored correctly, a milisecond power surge can destroy years of electronic data. This exhibition runs until 28 November at Monash Clayton.
Next we went to the exhibition of student work at Glen Eira gallery in Caulfield. This was work from the students of PIC (Photography Imaging College). Three of my students from last year are studying there, and some of this years students were the subjects. This exhibition closed yesterday and it was a pity it wasn't better publicised. (We then had a great night out
Yesterday I did my monthly stint at Monash Gallery of Art. [link] The current exhibition is the Bowness Prize and the standard of entries this year is simply spectacular. If you are in Melbourne over the next few weeks, it is a MUST SEE.
Time to do a final cleanup before the torture begins....
